Malaysia Week 2009

Malaysia Week to be held in Melbourne for the first time.

MELBOURNE - The inaugural Malaysia Week 2009, to be held from September 27th to October 10th, is a showcase of events that promote Malaysia through the arts, culture, food, tourism and trade. Organised for the first time in Melbourne, Malaysia Week is run by the sizable Malaysian student population here and supported by some of Malaysia’s largest multinationals including AirAsia X, Tourism Malaysia, Matrade and Proton.

Malaysia Week will kick off with Fiesta Malaysia on the 27th of September, a one-day celebration of Malaysia’s rich and vibrant cultural heritage. Fiesta Malaysia runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the expansive grounds of Queensbridge Square, Southbank. Highlights include traditional performances ranging from the colourful dances of West Malaysia to the exotic tribal music of Borneo. Fiesta Malaysia will also showcase mouth watering Malaysian cuisine from some of the best Malaysian restaurants in the city. There will even be ample opportunities to try out Malaysia’s beautiful cultural costumes and to participate in traditional games. Admission is free and fun for the whole family is guaranteed.

Visit www.fiestamalaysia.com for more information.

Following Fiesta Malaysia, the celebration continues with the Australian Malaysian Film Festival, which will screen some of Malaysia’s latest and best films. This year’s film festival, returning for the third time in Melbourne, has combined forces with Malaysia Week 2009 to highlight the unity within diversity between Malaysia and Australia. The films chosen this year include two films by the award winning Yasmin Ahmad, Muallaf and Talentime; Geng the Movie which is Malaysia’s first animated feature film; and Cicakman 2, a superhero action comedy. A batik exhibition will run alongside the film festival. Both of these events will be held from the 4th to 7th October at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Federation Square. For screening times and ticket prices, visit www.australianmalaysianfilmfestival.com.au.
Malaysia Week 2009 in Melbourne follows in the great tradition of Malaysia Week, London and Malaysian Festival, Sydney. Some of the events during Malaysia Week 2009 have been held before, including Fiesta Malaysia and the Australian Malaysian Film Festival, but this is the first time a collaboration on this grand scale has been attempted. The organisers of Malaysia Week include the various Malaysian student organisations in Victoria in partnership with professionals like A2K Media. There are over 7000 Malaysian students and expatriates living in Melbourne, and the whole community welcomes Melbournites to experience a part of Malaysia, right here in Australia's cultural capital!

With amazing Malaysian dj line ups and celebs:

*LAPSAP* (Zouk Malaysia)
Lapsap are Malaysia’s favourite dj tag-team duo. Their weekly parties at Zouk Malaysia, are known to be insane and filled with international guests. Some of the big names that they have supported and played with include some not so famous people like Steve Aoki, A-Trak, Simian Mobile Disco, Jack Beats, Shinichi Osawa, Mystery Jets, Sinden, Sh!tdisco, Sex Invaders, Stretch Armstrong and Brodinski.

These boys has just recently toured Europe and released a mix CD, Fruity Compact Disc. Besides throwing the best parties in Malaysia, their fashion label under the same name has already blossomed by having garage sales with Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Collection.

It is evident that Lapsap will soon take over the world. Therefore, come this August, you should experience first hand, how Lapsap parties are like and they will definitely give you a night, not only full of rubbish, but of extreme fun!

*Kenny Sia* (Celebrity Blogger)
Kenny Sia is arguably Malaysia’s number one blogger. Not only does he also have a strong fan-base in neighbouring, Singapore, this online funny man has already made it to Cleo Malaysia’s Top 50 Bachelor List!

Globetrotting Kenny will pass by Melbourne this August and this is your opportunity be under the same roof as Malaysia’s iconic symbol.

*KIM ONG* (Model/Celebrity Blogger)
Waking up every morning, she looks at herself in the mirror and reminds herself to smile. It’s like her personal motivation to start the day afresh, optimistically. That’s Kim Ong for you, a 25 year-old blogger from Ipoh who currently relishes life in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Her passion with the web started in 2003 on Xanga as she eventually took on her own domain name, creating a brand name for herself,
kimong.com since 2007.

The peak of her blogging in 2008 was when she was featured in FHM Magazine(May 2008) and also recently in Clive Magazine (October 2008). On her blog, Kim shares with readers her innate passion and zest for life through fashion, events, travel, food and so on.

In Kim’s spare time (apart from blogging, that is) – she likes to cook and also spends a lot of time with her friends and family members. Now happily married to Malaysian track cyclist Josiah Ng, Kim is building her career in Melbourne, where she finds her niche. She believes that it’s important being rich with love than being rich monetarily without having the love of people. Afterall,
kimong.com is mostly about optimism through love.
